The Art of the Remix: How to Flip a Track

Remixing is a powerful way to build your audience and flex your production skills. We discuss how to approach a remix, respect the original, and make it your own.

    Find the Core Element

When you get the stems for a remix, don't just use everything. Find the core element that makes the song special—usually the lead vocal or a signature melody—and build an entirely new track around it. Mute the rest of the original stems.

    Change the Context

The best remixes take the original vocal and put it in a completely different emotional context. Take a happy, upbeat pop vocal and put it over dark, brooding chords. Or take a slow acoustic ballad and turn it into a high-energy dance track.

    Make it Recognizably Yours

A remix should sound like you. Apply your signature sound design, your favorite drum patterns, and your unique mixing style. When someone hears the remix, they should immediately know you produced it.
